The Congressional Hepatitis Caucus, co-chaired by Rep. Grace Meng and Rep. Hank Johnson, introduced a resolution (H.Res. 563) recognizing July 28, 2021 as World Hepatitis Day. World Hepatitis Day is commemorated each year by the World Health Organization and by governments, organizations, and advocates in countries all over the world. Now is a great time to send an overview of key statistics and policy priorities to remind Congress of the urgent need for greater support and prioritization of viral hepatitis elimination.

As part of this year's B the Change Advocacy Challenge, we encourage you to take a moment to reach out to your Members of Congress to help raise awareness and advocate for hepatitis B prevention, surveillance, and research to find a cure. World Hepatitis Day is commemorated each year by the World Health Organization and by governments, organizations, and advocates in countries all over the world. This World Hepatitis Day, I wanted to take a moment to share with you an overview of key statistics and policy priorities to remind you of the urgent need for Congressional support and prioritization of viral hepatitis elimination. The need for federal attention and serious investments to combat hepatitis B is greater than ever: --Worldwide, nearly 300 million people are living with chronic hepatitis B infection, including an estimated 2.4 million in the U.S. --Although hepatitis B is preventable and treatable, there is still no cure for this disease. --Despite the existence of safe and effective vaccines that provide lifelong protection, only 25% of the U.S. adult population has been vaccinated against hepatitis B. --Without early diagnosis and intervention, 1 in 4 people chronically infected with hepatitis B will die prematurely from cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer. --Hepatitis B is one of the leading causes of primary liver cancer, which is the second deadliest cancer in the U.S. --Asian, Pacific Islander, and African communities are disproportionately impacted by hepatitis B. In order to eliminate hepatitis B and related health disparities, it is critical to secure increased federal funding for hepatitis B and liver cancer research and prevention programs, while ensuring access to health care and affordable medications.
